History
The Collection lies in one of the many addresses located in the Stanford Block of Richmond′s Bridge Road Precinct. A lovely and grandiose Victorian building constructed in 1870, an important time in Bridge Road′s history, the transformation from a major road reserve into a major thoroughfare from Melbourne to the eastern suburbs. The picture shown (right) is taken from the corner of Mary St. and Bridge Rd in 1908, 13 years after the cable tram service was installed; the predecessor to the 48 and 75 lines converted to electric in 1916.
The Stanford Block is one of a number of buildings listed on the Victorian Heritage Database as individually significant. It is a trademark timestamp in Greater Melbourne′s developmental history that has seen many phases of Richmond′s transformation from a bustling City with a Coat of Arms of its own, to the current member of the City of Yarra after the 1994 restructure of Victoria′s local government.
